Throughout your own life time, you have witnessed first hand the loss of credibility all around you. Has A-Rod lost credibility in your eyes? How do we treat baseball's Hall of Fame's candidates who admit to using steroids? Will Nixon and Clinton ever be judged on anything more than their scandals? Now certainly, these are the popular debates regarding credibility in the 21st century, but the impact that credibility has on our perception of our world is much more subtle, and sadly, overlooked by most
The internet, while providing infinite amounts of information, is not a fact checker. In fact, the majority of internet sources will not serve as reliable, authoritative sources that have been peer reviewed and found true. Translation: the information just isn't true. Consider the many motives that people have for presenting information in a 'certain' way. In a world where people are more than likely trying to advance their own idea, regardless of truth, it is critically important that can identify the difference between truth and trash.
Supporting Yourself with Cited Sources HELPS your position, not weakens it. Anytime you include a piece of information in your writing that you have found in your research, you have essentially, invited another person to your side of the debate table. Your opponent will certainly challenge this new 'weapon' and your new weapon must be able to defend itself. If your source loses credibility, so do you.
In-text citation rules: When you paraphrase or quote information, you must include in your sentence the date, the authority, and the credibility of this author.
Parenthetical Citation: After the paraphrase or quote information, you must include parenthesis. Within parenthesis, write the author and date. See the APA citation guide for exceptions.
